On Saturday, December 21, at 5 p.m. in our sanctuary, Westminster will offer a Longest Night Service as part of its monthly Taizé Service of Healing and Wholeness. The long winter nights in the midst of a festive season can be difficult for those of us experiencing loss, grief, sadness, and loneliness while most of the world seems to be celebrating. In times of political division, upheaval, and fear for the future, many of us feel a deep need for lament, discernment, and reconciliation during this liturgical season of waiting with hope and expectation. Some of us feel overwhelmed by responsibilities and anxiety. So much in our lives and in the world seems at odds with the coming of The Prince of Peace. This candlelight service will be a time of contemplative readings and songs that acknowledge both the difficulties of long darkness and the gifts it might offer. You may light candles as symbols of your prayers, and members of Westminster’s prayer team will be present to pray with you if you wish. Westminster’s labyrinth will be available to walk in the Great Hall at 4 p.m. Future labyrinth walks and healing-and-wholeness services will be held on the third Saturday of each month (except August) at 4 and 5 p.m. respectively. All are welcome.
