This is the day the Lord has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

An Act of Praise

Introit

*Westminster Chimes

*Invitation to Worship                                                                                   Calvin Bash

We offer to you a thanksgiving.

We call on the name of the Lord.

We place our trust in the Lord.

In the presence of all God’s people,

Whether in Your home or ours,

Let us worship together.

*Hymn #529                          “Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether”                        union seminary

Draw us in the Spirit’s tether,
for when humbly in your name,
two or three are met together,
you are in the midst of them;
alleluia, alleluia!
Touch we now your garment’s hem.

As disciples used to gather
in the name of Christ to sup,
then with thanks to God the Father
break the bread and bless the cup,
alleluia, alleluia!
So now bind our friendship up.

All our meals and all our living
make as sacraments of you,
that by caring, helping, giving,
we may be disciples true.
Alleluia, alleluia!
we will serve with faith anew.

*Invitation to Confession                                                                       Rev. Junha Kim

It is because of our faith in the resurrection of life and hope that each week, we confess together the ways our faith and hope have not been set on God. We confess together when we have stopped believing in ourselves, in our neighbors, and in the life known to us through Jesus Christ. By naming how we stumble, we are reminded to turn towards God. Let us pray together, first in silence.

*Silent Prayer

*Unison Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, even as we proclaim the saving life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we fail to see the living Christ in our midst. We find ourselves preoccupied with our own well-being and success, forgetting your imperative to love our neighbors as ourselves. We turn away from systems that challenge our way of thinking, choosing to justify our actions instead of examining our intentions.

Show us again how to live a resurrection faith, a faith that sees life and hope in the midst of death and destruction. Transform our hearts so that where they are hardened toward you, neighbor, and self, they may once again be filled with love and moved to actions of grace and mercy. In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

*Assurance of Forgiveness                                                                    Kathyn Waineo

In the resurrection of Jesus was the resurrection of a hope long buried, a love long lost, and a life unknown. This is the good news: through the forgiveness of the world’s sins, the dirt of the earth has loosened, the way of love recovered, and a life thought impossible has been made real.

Alleluia, Amen!

*The Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you all.

            And also with you.

An Act of Proclamation

The Scripture Reading             Luke 24:13-35 (p.90)                             Rev. Junha Kim

Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.  While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.  And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad.  Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’  He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place.  Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.  Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’  Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared!  Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’  Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on.  But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them.  When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’  That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together.  They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’  Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

A Moment for Silent Reflection

An Act of Response

*Hymn #762                 “When the Poor Ones (Cuando el Pobre)”                       el camino

1 When the poor ones who have nothing share with strangers

when the thirsty water give unto us all,

when the crippled in their weakness strengthen others,

then we know that God still goes that road with us,

then we know that God still goes that road with us.

Cuando el pobre nada tiene y aún reparte,

cuando un hombre pasa sed y agua nos da,

cuando el débil a su hermano fortalece,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar.

2 When at last all those who suffer find their comfort,

when they hope though even hope seems hopelessness,

when we love though hate at times seems all around us,

then we know that God still goes that road with us,

then we know that God still goes that road with us.

Cuando un hombre sufre y logra su consuelo,

cuando espera y no se cansa de esperar,

cuando amamos, aunque el odio nos rodee,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar.

3 When our joy fills up our cup to overflowing,

when our lips can speak no words other than true,

when we know that love for simple things is better,

then we know that God still goes that road with us,

then we know that God still goes that road with us.

Cuando crece la alegría y nos inunda,

cuando dicen nuestros labios la verdad,

cuando amamos el sentir de los sencillos,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar.

4 When our homes are filled with goodness and abundance,

when we learn how to make peace instead of war,

when each stranger that we meet is called a neighbor,

then we know that God still goes that road with us,

then we know that God still goes that road with us.

Cuando abunda el bien y llena los hogares,

cuando un hombre donde hay guerra pone paz,

cuando “hermano” le llamamos al extraño,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar,

va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar.

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

      Give us this day our daily bread;

      and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Hymn #157                              “I Danced in the Morning”                       lord of the dance

1 I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth.
At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Refrain:
Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

2 I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
but they would not dance and they would not follow me.
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John.
They came with me and the dance went on. [Refrain]

3 I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame.
The holy people said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high,
and left me there on a cross to die. [Refrain]

4 I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black.
It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.
They buried my body and they thought I’d gone,
but I am the dance and I still go on. [Refrain]

5 They cut me down and I leapt up high.
I am the life that will never, never die.
I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. [Refrain]
