From Playing Hopscotch in Heaven by Thom M Shuman

Day by day, God leads us:

         to the deep, deep pools of peace, to the green, lush lawns of grace.

Day by day, Jesus calls us:

         to pour out ourselves in service, to anoint the stranger with hope.

Day by day, the Holy Spirit shows us:

         the community we could be, the family we are called to become.

*Hymn #634                                 “To God be the Glory”                                               tune

To God be the glory; great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory: great things he has done!

Great things he has taught us; great things he has done,
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer and higher and greater will be
our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. [Refrain]

*Invitation to Confession                                                                       Rev. Junha Kim

Day by day, the God of grace calls us to truth-telling—truth about our orientation toward forgiveness and our essential pull toward love. We long to deepen our faith in the One Who Cares. In full confidence that God hears and understands our deepest longings, let us tell the truth, first in silence..

*Silent Prayer

*Unison Prayer of Confession

Why is it so hard to trust your goodness and mercy, oh Generous One? We lock our grips on what we think we possess, closing our hearts to the needs around us. While you steadfastly call us home to dinner at the family table, we prefer to stay outside playing in the shadows. We thirst for the waters of living hope but drown out the cries for justice. Your offer of stillness and peace, is an opportunity to be part of something bigger than ourselves, whereas we neglect to remember whose we are.

Forgive us for following other voices. Anoint us with the oil of mercy so that our hearts overflow with the joy of authentically following the Good Shepherd, Jesus the Christ.

*Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, this is the Good News: “day by day” has become “this day.” Today (again) know this:

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Alleluia and amen.

*The Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you all.

            And also with you.

An Act of Proclamation

The Scripture Reading                  John 10: 1-10                             Rev. Eileen Parfrey

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

“Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.  The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.  But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Anthem                                     “He Never Failed Me Yet”                                Robert Ray

Peter Haub, Geoff Ereth, Christina Mata, solos

I will sing of God’s mercy, every day, every hour, He gives me power.

I will sing and give thanks to Thee for all the dangers, toils and snares

that He has brought me out.

He is my God and I’ll serve Him, no matter what the test.

(Chorus) Trust and never doubt, Jesus will surely bring you out;

He never failed me yet.

I know God is able to deliver in time of storm.

I know that he’ll keep you safe from all earthly harm.

One day when my weary soul is at rest,

I’m going home to be forever blessed.

Chorus

Didn’t my God deliver Moses from King Pharaoh?

And didn’t He cool the fiery furnace for Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego?

When I think of what my God can do, He delivered Daniel,

I know He will deliver you.

He never failed me; he never failed me yet!

Sermon                                   “This Isn’t About the Sheep”                 Rev. Eileen Parfrey

A Moment for Silent Reflection

An Act of Response

*Hymn #802                        “The King of Love My Sheperd Is”                           st columba

The King of love my shepherd is,
whose goodness faileth never.
I nothing lack if I am his,
and he is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow,
my ransomed soul he leadeth;
and where the verdant pastures grow,
with food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed,
but yet in love he sought me;
and on his shoulder gently laid,
and home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill,
with thee, dear Lord, beside me;
thy rod and staff my comfort still,
thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spreadst a table in my sight;
thy unction grace bestoweth;
and oh, what transport of delight
from thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days,
thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise
within thy house forever.

Sharing Joys & Concerns                                                                      Rev. Junha Kim

(At the conclusion of spoken joys, let us pray together, “Thanks be to you, O God.”

For concerns, let us make them our own by praying, “Lord, hear our prayer.”)

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer

      Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

      Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

      Give us this day our daily bread;

      and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

      and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

      For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory Anthem                  “Praise His Holy Name”                             Keith Hampton

Sing till the power of the Lord come down.  Shout!  Hallelujah!  Praise His Holy name! Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me;

I once was lost but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see.Jesus, Jesus, how I love Thee; Shout Hallelujah!  Praise His Holy name!

Sing till the power of the Lord come down.  Shout!  Hallelujah!  Praise His Holy name!

Must Jesus bear the cross alone and all the world go free?

No, there’s a cross for everyone and there’s a cross for me.

Jesus, Jesus, how I love Thee; Shout Hallelujah!  Praise His Holy name!

Holy Jesus, praise His name, oh Hallelujah, Praise His holy name!

*Hymn #187                “Savior, Like a Sheperd Lead Us” (vv. 1, 2)                      bradbury

Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use Thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray.
